In fact, I sell wooden letter and number tiles in my shop whenever I can find them.

This summer I'm happily back on the patio with my found objects, jars, and potions! I decided to see what would happen if I played with numbers... wooden numbers. Which set do you like best?

This distressed set is my favorite, and the technique is so easy. Round the corners and edges with a wood file. Scrape and dent the tops of the tiles while you're at it. Then, apply a light coat of my secret ingredient -- almond oil. Let it soak in for a few minutes then wipe off excess.

Closeup of Holly Berry Ribbon Garland

I was not in the mood to make holiday pins or napkin holders. But I wanted to do right by the big bag of holly berries my neighbor bequeathed me when she retired from crafting. Finally, recently, I thought of using them to make this easy swag garland for a holiday tree, doorway, mantle, or even gift wrap.

All you need is a roll of wire-edge ribbon and some big ole holly berries from my Etsy shop. You could also use a ruler to check your spacing between clumps. Work at a long table or on the floor, if possible. Try to keep your ribbon flat while you work.

1. Pinch a spot on your ribbon to make a place to wrap the berries. Pleat it a little as you pinch, but don't fold it. Try not to twist the ribbon while you work.

Use 3 stems for 2-3 inch ribbon, more if your ribbon is wider.

2. Next, grab 3 stems (they are double tipped so that's 6 berries) and line them up evenly.

3. Fold the berries in half, right on top of the pinched part. Then grab the stems (not the berries) right under the ribbon, and twist a couple of times. (It's best not to tighten the clumps too much until you're sure about your spacing.)

Pinch the ribbon, fold the stems and twist!

4. Repeat those steps -- pinch the ribbon, fold 3 berry stems, then twist.

Sorry, didn't have a tree to wrap this around. ;-)

Hint: You might want to "fluff" the wire-edge ribbon as you work, especially right next to the berry clumps, and press things flat as you work.
TARNISHED SILVER: The middle cabochon is painted and then highlighted with silver wax finish.

First, mush dark brown acrylic paint (the artist quality kind from the tube) over the entire cabochon and use a stiff brush to push it down into all the little nooks and crannies.

Before the paint dries completely, gently wipe off only the high areas with a slightly damp cloth, to get an aged look.

Let the paint dry completely, then dab on the wax metallic polish (I like Rub n Buff the best).

Once the polish dries (I wait until the next day), you can buff it to a satin finish and your cabochon will look like tarnished silver!

You'll Need:

1 paper or chipboard covered blank notebook

1 large printed paper napkin, split into layers

Tinted decoupage medium, Mod Podge, or bookbinding glue

Flat paintbrush or sponge brush, 1-2" wide

Old plastic credit card or hotel room card

Craft knife or single edge razor blade

Sheet of printer paper or plain scrap paper

Metallic rubber stamping ink

Rubber stamp to coordinate with napkin paper

Pencil

Damp paper towel

1. Unfold a napkin and split the layers apart. Discard the white layer and save only the printed layer. This thin layer will become semi-transparent when you apply the glue, and blend with the notebook color.

Discard all but the printed layer of the napkin.

2. Position the napkin wherever you want it on the cover. With your pencil, lightly mark the corners and sides of the cover on your napkin. Set it aside -- don't cut it yet.

3. Open the notebook so that you're only working with the front cover. Apply an even layer of the decoupage medium to the entire cover, all the way to the edges. Work quickly or the medium will soak in.

4. Grab the napkin and, using the pencil marks as a guide, lay it down onto the cover. Spread it out. Don't worry if you get a few wrinkles and tears, the decoupage medium will darken and "age" those areas. Gently dab the napkin down onto the cover until it's pretty flat.

Wrinkled and torn is ok!

5. Here's how to burnish down the napkin -- lay your white paper on top of the wet cover, and, using a long edge of your old credit card to press out the excess medium. Start in the middle and burnish out toward each edge. Repeat, starting in the center and scraping out in a different direction each time. Clean up any extra medium with a slightly damp paper towel.

Burnish from the center out to the edges with an old credit card.
Trim with a single edge razor or your favorite craft knife.

6. Set aside the white paper cover and let the cover dry completely. You will probably have extra napkin hanging over the edges. Resist the temptation to trim the edges!

7. Once the first coat is dry, apply another thin coat. It will protect the napkin. Dab up any extra and let dry completely again.

Don't be alarmed if your cover warps. It should flatten when dry, but if not, you can press it until a big book later.

8. Now you're ready to trim the excess napkin. Turn the notebook over and, using your razor or craft knife, trim carefully right along the edge. If you burnished well, the edges should be completely glued down. If not, just touch it up with a little more medium.

9. I like to add more napkin scraps here and there, and a little more medium to give the piece an aged look. Don't add too much more moisture though, or your cover could start to fall apart.

10. I always like to add a metallic touch, so in this example I stamped a leaf-and-stem motif with fast-drying gold Delicata ink.

Fortunately, I found a similar doll (thank you Google image search) and learned a little bit about the interesting craft of Japanese amigurumi.

Here's a little bit about the ones we found: Ami is the Japanese word for "knit/crochet," and nuigurumi is Japanese for "doll." They became more popular after WWII and on into the two-thousandsies. Mine are crocheted and stuffed, and their faces are hand painted. They measure about 2-3 inches in height and each one is slightly different. These make nice little gifts, but I would not use them as toys, they're mainly for collecting, a la other Japanese Kawaii-style items.
This entire month, for the first time I'm putting all my vintage sequin strands on sale -- 10% off, no minimum order (usually you have to buy 5 strands to get the discount). Specialty sequins are not discounted, but all others are. Here's a direct link to the sale items: https://www.etsy.com/shop/seriousbeader?section_id=1 .

Here's a fun little spring project, my recent take on the miniature vintage flocked flowers thing... which incidentally I try to carry in my Etsy shop whenever I can find them.

Vintage Flocked Flower Cupcake Toppers

Traditionally, these little craft treasures were used in doll hats and miniature crafts. Most that I've found were made in Japan or Korea. The newer miniature flowers don't have the delicate colors, detail and flocking, not to mention the soft-colored plaster stamens, or pips. My collection is pretty faded, but still precious.

Floral tape, artist quality glitter glue, vintage mini flocked flowers, and food skewers

To complete this project, you'll need a few basic supplies:

Miniature flowers to wrap. If you can't find the vintage ones, try these on Amazon.

Floral tape in your choice of color(s).

Food grade wooden skewers. Mine say "gluten free," lol. I got them at a restaurant supply store.

Glitter glue. Also your choice of color, but I highly recommend Ranger Stickles. It doesn't drip or flatten out when it dries. Also, the applicator allows you to use a very fine line.

If you trim your food picks, you'll also need a sharp pair of scissors or craft knife.

Comb Bound Bingo Card Books

I made these little books from vintage bingo cards, filled with vintage plain papers, mixed with assorted graph and decorative papers, each one with a nice little pocket in the back!

Vintage graph papers, stationery, and fun filler papers

All the materials came from my stash of papers and the MOTH's great hunting techniques. He found three boxes of the plastic combs, and then finally found us an excellent (and very vintage) comb binder to punch and gather everything.

Library card pockets make great pockets in little notebooks!

I decorated several of these, but honestly, the ones I like best are the plain cards with just a red star in the Free space.
I even had a dream about what to make!

The class is called Birds Gone Wild, and although you do have to be able to wield some tin snips and hole punchers, and bend a little wire, it's an easy, creative class with lots of possibilities and simple cold construction techniques. I opted to make door knockers with bells on the bottoms. Kind of a low-tech security system. ;-)

Leighanna is so relaxed, well prepared, and easy going -- she had extras of all the tools I forgot, plus small kits with a perfect, concise booklet, template, and little parts for everybody. Her demos were short and to the point, and fun!

I learned a cool new resist/patina technique which I didn't actually try in class because all my tins already had patterns on them. Finished one bird, with a few tweaks (or would that be tweets?) it will be flying off to the East Mountains to a friend's home. The other one (not pictured) will probably stay at Rancho Tafoya for awhile, seeing as it's coming on spring here...
Lucy from Lucy's Locket makes imaginative, one-of-a-kind heirloom quality pincushions from lovely old vintage fabric. I just loved seeing how the amber pins coordinated with this felted baby thrush pincushion. The birdie was made from a felted wool sweater, and in addition to the layered pincushion it's perched on, its back holds a rescued Victorian bobble! Not surprising this item sold, but she has plenty more in her shop. Very creative! Inspiring work. And recycled!

Most are on strands, fresh from the factory master hanks. I stock cupped and flat sequins, large and small, in a wide range of colors and finishes, as well as a few of the diamond shaped, single hole spangles used in knitting and for fringe.

So anyway, starting this year I'm offering a new discount on sequin strands -- and here's how it works:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mix and match 5 or more full strands for a 10% discount. HERE'S HOW:

Contact me via Etsy with your sequin choices (and anything else you want...). You can copy and paste the links or just type the sequin names into your message.

I'll set up a reserved listing for you with the adjusted price.

You make the purchase (and save a little $$ on shipping too!)

~ The discount applies only to full single strands of sequins, 5 or more strands.
~ Sorry, I cannot apply your discount after the purchase.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As if I didn't have enough up already, I'm adding new colors just about every week. Here's my favorite color of the week!

Everybody who works with "the little glass beads" has to learn (usually the hard way) how to deal with fancy surface finishes in your designs. Reflective finishes, matte finishes, rainbow finishes, see-through beads, yeah they're pretty, but they can sure cause problems!

Maybe this little write-up will help sort things out...
GRANDMA MOSES was an American folk artist who started painting seriously at the age of 78. She had first painted as a child with lemon and grape juice as her pigments! She also created rural and old-timey farm scenes in embroidery before her arthritis made that too difficult. A very hard worker, she worked and lived on farms all of her life. When ask what she would have done had she not become a painter, she gave this reply.

Instructions: Notice that the letters beneath the puzzle are jumbled, but stacked in columns. Each letter must go into a blank square, but it can only go into the column above it. Notice that the letter P in the far left column can only go in one place, because there's only one blank square in the column above it. Same with the letter D in the far right column.

Here's a clue: Notice that the second word in the first line contains only one (1) letter. In English, only two (2) words could possibly go there: A and I. Look in the column below the word. There is no letter A in the column. There is, however, a letter I available. Put the letter I in the blank square. Now, you have a T, R, E, and another I left to use somewhere in that column.

I just noticed that the colored pencil set I'm recommending for my May/June color theory class is on sale big time at the online Interweave store. This set retails for about $40.00 everywhere, but right now it's on sale for under $18.00, which is better than most of your big box store will get you, even with a coupon. Plus, this set comes with lots of accessories, including the pencil sharpener and blending stick I recommend for the class.

I do not know how long this sale will last...

But these are the best pencils I know of for rich color pigment, easy sharpening,

and for shading and blending. Especially with the accessories included.

The supply list is short -- you just need artist-quality colored pencils, access to a black and white printer, and some white paper. The price is good too...check out all the details here:
Well, in my small house, most rooms need to have more than one. Our dining room, for example, is also my Etsy jewelry supply shop. I thought some folks would like to see where I process your orders. Others might enjoy seeing how I cram all this stuff in here!
See? I'm an organized hoarder. In front of the shelves I have a rolling cart that acts like a shipping station (bottom right). It rolls out of the room and into my studio when a bunch of people come over.

This awesome antique desk is crammed with inventory. The top shelf holds vintage beads and findings that are all counted and ready to photograph.

And this is where everything goes that's listed in my shop. These carts also roll out of the room when it needs to be a dining room again.
